Profile

Lab Biography

Cubic Labs LLC provides powder XRD, XRF, and SEM-EDX analysis for clients in manufacturing, environmental consulting, mining and minerals, battery materials, and failure analysis. Based in Lafayette, Indiana, we operate through research-grade instrumentation at Purdue University — including a Malvern Panalytical Epsilon 4 XRF, PANalytical Empyrean powder XRD, and Thermo Fisher Apreo 2S FEG SEM.

What sets us apart is the consultative approach. With 22 years of applied research experience across energy, environmental, and materials science, we spend time understanding the actual problem before recommending an analytical strategy. Transparent, all-inclusive pricing and fast turnaround mean no surprises on cost or timeline. We work best with clients who have a specific question they need answered, not just a box to check.

Qualifications

  • MS Physics, University of North Dakota
  • 22 years applied research experience (Energy & Environmental Research Center, UND; Triclinic Labs)
  • Expertise in powder XRD (Rietveld refinement, quantitative phase analysis), XRF (fundamental parameters, matrix correction methods), and SEM-EDX (imaging, elemental mapping, particle analysis)
  • Published research in geological characterization, mercury control, and energy materials
  • Sample preparation capabilities: knife mill, planetary ball mill, helium pycnometry (garage lab, Lafayette IN)
  • Analytical services provided for research, decision-support, and industrial QA/QC purposes
  • Note: Not currently ISO 17025 or Nadcap accredited; regulated/certification testing applications should confirm suitability prior to engagement

Standards & Methodologies

  • Powder XRD: Phase identification, semi-quantitative and quantitative phase analysis (Rietveld refinement), crystallinity assessment; ICDD PDF-5+, ICSD, and CSD databases; Cu Kα source, PIXcel3D-Medipix3 detector
  • XRF: Elemental analysis Na–U; relative and absolute concentrations; fundamental parameters and empirical matrix correction methods; pressed pellet and loose powder sample formats; ASTM C618 fly ash classification
  • SEM-EDX: Secondary electron, backscatter electron, and in-lens imaging; point EDX, area mapping, and line scan elemental analysis; particle characterization (size, morphology, composition)
  • Supporting methods: Helium pycnometry (true/skeletal density), optical microscopy, sample preparation (grinding, milling, cross-sectioning, pellet preparation)
  • Reporting levels available: data-only, data with methods, and interpretive reports with recommendations
