Impact and Compression Testing of STF-Infused TPU Lattice Structures

Project Description

We’re a high school research team seeking a contract laboratory to perform impact and compression testing on small-batch, 3D-printed thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) joint structures containing an internal honeycomb lattice.

The test specimens are infused with a student-prepared shear-thickening fluid consisting of 20% hydrophilic fumed silica and 80% polyethylene glycol 200 by weight. Empty TPU lattice structures will be provided as controls.

Requested testing includes:

  • Impact or drop testing to compare shock absorption and energy dissipation under dynamic, high-velocity loading
  • Quasi-static compression testing to evaluate structural stiffness and deformation behavior
  • Dynamic compression testing at multiple loading rates to assess rate-dependent stiffness and the response of the fluid-filled lattice
  • Comparative analysis of STF-infused specimens and unfilled controls

The laboratory should provide applicable specimen size and geometry requirements, recommended test methods, minimum sample quantities, pricing, turnaround time, and available reporting options. Facilities experienced with small research batches, academic studies, or student-led projects are encouraged to respond.
