We purchased a blacksmithing hammer head that was advertised as 52100 steel. Preliminary hardness file testing and an attempted heat-treatment process suggest that the material may be softer than expected or may not be 52100 steel. We need laboratory testing to determine the alloy composition and measure the material’s hardness. The results may be used to document whether the hammer head matches the seller’s stated material specification.
