The measurement of heavy metals in waxes is important especially when the material comes in contact with the body through ingestion, dermal contact, or inhalation when used in food, pharmaceutical, and candle-making applications, respectively. In this paper we describe the quantitation of nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and the semi-quantitative determination of mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), and vanadium (V) in paraffin wax samples used in the production of candles.
