ASTM International's thermal insulation committee (C16) has approved a new standard for layered, glass fiber felt pipe and board insulation. The material covered by the new standard (C1937) is used on surfaces with temperatures that range from ambient to 1400°F (760°C).

?The material covered in the new standard is semi-rigid, high-temperature pipe and board insulation intended for industrial use, such as combustion power plants, oil refineries, chemical plants, and distinct energy systems,? says ASTM member Gordon Hart, consulting engineer, Artek Engineering. ?While there are several other pipe and/or board insulation materials rated for continuous use up to 1200°F, this is the only material that, both as a pipe and board, can be used at services temperatures as high as 1400°F.?

Hart notes that, compared to other fibrous insulation materials, the material covered in C1937 has a high compressive strength and is rated as non-combustible.

All interested parties are invited to join C16 to help develop future editions of the standard, as well as to assist in the development of new thermal insulation standards.
