In Vitro Antimicrobial Testing of Probiotic Strains Against Oral Pathogens

Project Description

We are seeking an experienced microbiology contract laboratory to conduct an in vitro study evaluating the antimicrobial activity of probiotic strains against clinically relevant oral pathogens. The objective of this study is to assess the ability of selected probiotic strains to inhibit the growth of key oral pathogens associated with caries and periodontal disease.

The following microorganisms are intended to be included in the study:

  1. Streptococcus mutans
  2. Red Complex pathogens: Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola
  3. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans

Test Materials

  • Individual probiotic strains (to be supplied by us or discussed with the laboratory)
  • A probiotic formulation combining selected strains

Study Concept

Our primary interest is an in vitro pathogen growth inhibition study, performed on agar plates (Petri dishes). We need antimicrobial activity assessed through measurement of zones of inhibition or a scientifically validated and reproducible alternative method suitable for anaerobic and facultative oral pathogens.

We are particularly interested in:

  1. Testing each probiotic strain individually & a multi-strain probiotic formulation
  2. Comparative evaluation of inhibitory effects against each pathogen
