ANSI/ANAB Accreditation to Support UN-Adopted Scheme for Reduced CO2 Emissions in International Aviation

03/13/2019

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) National Accreditation Board (ANAB) announced plans to develop a program to accredit third-party validation services for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), a scheme to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in global aviation. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations that develops international aviation standards and recommended practices for its 192 member states worldwide, adopted CORSIA as part of a broader package of measures intended to help ICAO achieve its aspirational goal of carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onwards.

CORSIA?s adoption imposed an immediate compliance obligation, effective January 1, 2019, compelling aircraft operators in CORSIA member states to measure their annual carbon emissions using CORSIA-approved protocols within the scheme ? which features a system of monitoring fuel use, reporting CO2 emissions, and data verification. To assure the data verification process is carried out by a competent body and that it is conducted against international standards, ICAO requires that verification bodies be accredited to the international standard ISO 14065 by an International Accreditation Forum (IAF) member body. ANSI has been operating an internationally recognized ISO 14065 accreditation program for more than 10 years.

"The ICAO/CORSIA scheme requires rigorous data verification, a key component of this critically important worldwide initiative to thwart climate change," said Ann Howard, ANSI's director of environmental accreditation programs. ?ANSI/ANAB accreditation services offer leadership and experience in a variety of reporting programs and projects for the reduction and removal of greenhouse gases, and we are eager to announce our plans to offer accreditation for CORSIA.?
